Sharp pain when chewing — especially on release of the bite — sensitivity to cold that lingers, discomfort that’s hard to localize to one tooth, and pain that comes and goes unpredictably are the classic signs of what clinicians call cracked tooth syndrome. Left undiagnosed, a crack can propagate into the root, turning a savable tooth into an extraction.

Treatment depends entirely on the crack’s depth and direction. A crack confined to the crown may need only a protective restoration from your dentist.
